Field Trip

Yesterday, on Tuesday morning, all the brazilians students and the geology class went to Park Craters of the Moon. Bob Brock, the college counselor of the Community School, and the geology teacher, Hannes, guide us for that whole morning. The park is a place where two thousands years ago had happened some eruptions. The landscape was amazing, it seemed to be an endless ocean of rocks. It was a opportunity to learn about the differences among the most kind of the vulcano rocks. Then we could analyze if they had more Bazaltic, or If they were a pahoehoe, or ah-ah.

We also entered in two caves, which are lava tubes - tunnels that once had been some "lava rivers". At the caves we could observe the layers where the lava had been years and years ago.
The first one were easier to pass through. because it was big and large, and was called the Indian Tunnel because there were some evidences that indian tribes lived there. It was a shelter for that tribes. The second one was more difficult to get in, it is named Boy Scout. In this one, the rocks were closed and it made the passages more tight and there was also ice on the rocks. When we arrived at the end of the second cave, all of us turned off ours lights and stayed almost 3 minutes in completely silence. It was really peaceful!
After we came out to the cave, we sang Happy Birthday to Joao!!!

When we were going back to the school, we stopped besides the road to see a hot spring - a kind of lake or river made of warm water that comes from the underground layer.

Weekend!

Hey everyone,
Just in to make a quick post about what happened over the weekend, as I'm sure someone mentioned in a couple of posts, we went snowshoeing and right after that we walked a couple of miles to see the Red Fish Lake which is such a beautiful place, there are camping sites along the national park where the lake is located and we discovered that americans really like to camp and do outdoor activities just like we see in the movies. It was funny because we walked along a couple of campsites and there was "beware of the bears" signs and Gabi and I just went nuts about it!
Snowshoeing was really difficult because the mountain that we went to called Sawtooth was HUGE and it takes a lot of work to go up  but it was so worth it, we felt like we were at the top of the world when we made it haha

On sunday, we traveled to Boise and visited the Discovery Center of Idaho which to all of you who visited Catavento Museum in Sao Paulo it's kind of their version of that. We had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory and then we finally had the moment we were waiting for: shopping time! haha Just kidding guys, we actually met Glorinha over there and it was really fun trip!

Friday, friday...

Good night!
So, since this blog doesn't follow a chronological order, my post is going to expose some past events of our great stay in Sun Valley.
On Friday, although we didn't have many activities, was a day with many news. We were given a list of activities that we could join in the Middle School's Enrichment classes. Leticia and I went to the music class, which combines the kid's musical perception with tools provided by technology. To create our songs, we used a computer apps that enables you to form melodies by matching sounds of different instruments, for example, violin, drums and bass. Our final result was a very latin, brazilian mixed, which we saved and is going to be published soon.
After that, before my Chemistry class, it was the first time that we saw snow occurring. So exciting!
Just after school, we went to them gym's kitchen so we could cook brigadeiro for the "brazilian dance", as we were in charge of the food and the music. The party was absolutely cheerful and the students tried their best on dressing typically (although not even us know how a typical brazilian costume looks like). They also carefully decorated the party, and we are so pleased for that! Gladly the brigadeiro and the forro were really appreciated.

Assembly / Presentation of SESC High School

Yesterday, on Monday, the Community School had a special schedule because the Assembly, that they actually have every Monday. But the last one was a little longer due to our presentation. In Assembly normally teachers and student share with the whole community what they have done, and some other news. It`s really interesting how they were paying attention in what was going on in the school.
We had from 15 to 20 minutes to introduce them our school, a little bit about SESC and our regions. We showed a video than we also explaining how SESC works, spread in Brazil. Then everyone talked a little bit, for one minute, about our five regions. We spoke about our ecosystems, economics, people and some other curiosities.

Enrichment Classes

On last Friday we joined the enrichement classes at the middle school bulding. These are classes which provide the opportunity to get in touch with different skills every Friday. We were invited to know their classes which came from Green House Project and Yoga to Lego Group, Anphibians, and many others. I and Iuri went to the Lego class.
The group were about 5 to 7 students. Every class they have to do a kind of new mission, last Friday they had to project one Boombing Robot (I'm not sure about the speeling). Since they are children, we were surprised how concentrated they were. It also was awesome to watch they projecting the robots in many different ways, they are so creative! At the end of the class they tested their own robots at the same time and all of them worked very well.

Afternoon with host sister

Hello!
Today we had a special schedule at school, in order to watch to presentations of students from the Community School and the exchange students. It means that this was that expected day when we talked about our country, our school, our states and so on. I think we could go beyond the stereotypes of Brazil and make possible for them to get to know more about our school.
After school, we had the afternoon dedicated to activities with our host families. So, Lily and I decided to ride her horse and then go to dance class. It was really cool!
I had never ridden a horse before, but Wellington was pretty nice to me. Lily's help was also fundamental: she is a great teacher and friend.

Especially for Ronaldo

The main purpose of this post is to show that in spite of being abroad, we do not forget our teachers. Actually, almost every moment becomes an opportunity to remember of them. To register this moments, we took pictures, videos and this first post is dedicated to our dear geography teacher Ronaldo.

He was first mentioned in our conversations when we were having lunch at Mc Donald`s at the airport of Atlanta. Someone just commented: "oh, this Mc Donald's tastes exactly as the brazilian one. Just as Ronaldo told us!"

Then, on Thursday, during our visit through Hailey Historical Museum, we were just flabbergasted after have seen this treasure:

And as we are talking about geography, it is interesting to mention that, although we don't have  Geography as a subject, there is Geology. Tomorrow we are going with the Geology class for a field trip!
