Two weeks in The Community School: Too fast and too good!

Hi everybody!

Our trip is over now and everything I’m feeling now is “hosthomesick”.

After these two weeks, I can see how I grow up and learned many thing about the American culture and English. I improved my speech and showed to everyone how beautiful is our country. Now we Just have to be prepared to show them closer and in colors how exciting is Brazil in June when they are coming.

To close my posts here, I would like to make comments about the classes and the way the teachers explain their subjects. All the exchange group attended the classes that our host brother/sister does. So we realized that we should talk about our experiences in classroom.

As I said before, Brett attends a seven differents classes: English, History, Geometry, Spanish, Chemistry, Aphelion and Writting Lab. The schedule is very different from the one we have in Brazil. At The Community School, the students have one kind of science each year and Brett has Chemistry this year. It´s the same way with Math.

The English class is pretty interesting. Tim Price, the teacher, is really envolved with what he does and can get the best things from the students. When we were there, he was working with three different kind of material: a book, a movie and a poem, but all of them are talking pratically about the same thing. I really like the way he works because people are different and they may like different things. We may get interested about a historical book because we liked the movie about the some issue.  So I think it´s a good plan tio make the students interested.

Something that caught my attention is the fact that as we make at ESEM they have others subjects that talk about the same thing. So we also have the interdisciplinarity there. At some time, three teachers of History, English and “Law and Literature” got together and started to talk about the war that happened in Vietnan. It was something really interesting to see.

The Geometry class is really amazing! I feel a little guilty for talking about it (I like Geometry) but it was my favorite one. Willy is a nice teacher. He likes kidding with his students and his classes are funny. When I was there, they were studying areas of geometric forms. We saw a great movie about 2D and 3D. The students made many problems and a test. The way He works is pretty similar to the way we have at ESEM. After the test, they always correct the test and take all the doubts off.

The Spanish class is exciting too. Pilar is always smiling and playing with his students. The way she teachs is also similar to our English classes. There we have fun, we learn, we play games, we smile! The whole thing is so funny! The most amazing thing? SHE HAS A “SLATE”!!! And she uses it in the class when she makes the games. A important thing that she does is the massive studying of Grammar. Just as in Portuguese, Spanish has many hard rules and the student has to learn all of them. So Pilar tries to teach in funniest way!

The Chemistry class is teached by Jen. She is really nice! They were studying Polimers. The second year students haven’t seen the issue before so it´s something new but not so hard. I had some problems because of all the technical terms of Chemistry in English, but I learned many things about Molecular Bond and Polarity last year, so it became something easy in time. This trimester, they are studying everything about Smells.

As you already know, Aphelion is a class but works as a kind of workshop. The students make a magazine and try to sell it to the other ones. Ryan, the teacher, is really criative but she always tries to get the Best ideas from the students. They create things to promote the magazine like dancings, vídeos, papers. In the class, there were three of us: Me, Jordy and Raísa. We took part of one of those presentations. We made a flash-mob that was presented on stage at the Assembly and it was really good and funny.

These are the classes I attended to during these two weeks. I would like to say that I compared sometimes the way that the two schools work, but just to make what I was saying clear. They have similar and different things at the same time from Escola SESC. I think the most important thing is that they are amazing and excellent schools.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who was envolved in the Exchange Program and belived in our work. Once more, I would like to thank everybody from The Community School for being so kind and recieving us so well and especially the families for hosting us. And of course, I couldn’t forget to thank you guys for following our blog that was carefully made for you. Thank you!

See you!

Back to Brazil :)

Hi everyone!
Our trip back to Brazil was pretty good.
The flight from Atlanta to Brazil was a little bit late but nothing so bad. It was scheduled for 21:50 and just took off at 23h. During this time we talked and had fun in the airport. About ten hours later, we landed in Brazil. After wait about 30 minutes for all the luggages, we passed through the “Customs" and then we ran for Glorinha’s hug. AAUSHAUHS’

We met teacher Antonio at school and he said congratulations to everyone. After that, we had the wonderful Brazilian lunch! The American food is good, but ours can’t be compared. Melina and Raísa were the first ones to leave the school. The others left in the following day.

See you guys!

p.s.: I’m already in Teresina and it´s rainning!

Last Spanish Class

Hi guys!
Today was our last day at The Community School!
I'm a little bit sad because these two weeks have been running so fast!
There were four of us in our Spanish class today and we got suprised when Pilar told us that Puerto Rico belongs to USA. We didn't know that and she explained everything for us and the class group. Everybody who is born in Puerto Rico is american citizens. Did you know that?

I'll miss you and your class so much, Pilar!

xD'

p.s.: Brett is snowboarding and Pilar drove me home today after school! *---*

Greek Dinner Last Wednesday :)

Hi everyone!
As was said before, we had a beautiful greek dinner at Sophia's house where Raisa is staying.
I know it's a little late for posting photos but as Leticia Livia (other ESEM brazilian student) always says: "Photos are always good!"

Geraldo was learning how to dance Greek music.

Noe's mother, Sophia's mother, Amanda and Sophia.
(Noe is the Yara's host sister)

Sophia and her family have a beautiful house! I really had fun there! We learned many thing about the Greek culture and the food was great!

See you, guys!

SketchUp and Geometry

Hi everyone!
I would like to comment about a really interesting tool that Willy, the Geometry teacher, uses in his classes. We can draw the geometric forms and the students can see more clearly what they have to do. Willy shows the students the problem that they should find the answer. If they find any difficulty, he draws the geometric form in his computer and put it on the board. It's really interesting and helps a lot.

This software is from google and I don't know if it's free or not, but can be a great tool for our classes in Brazil. It's just an idea.

See you!

Aphelion :)

Hey guys!
How R U doing?

I'm here to talk about something really nice in The Community School (TCS): Aphelion.
It's kind of class but for us it seems like a workshop.
Aphelion is a magazine produced by the students who attend this class.
They do everything: the layout, the texts, the organization of the issues that are going to be posted on it, the cover... It's really interesting. Brett attends the class everyday and he likes it a lot.
Furthermore, they make things to promote this magazine like videos and dances that can be presented on the Assembly which happens every Monday.

So I was thinking if it be possible to transform the "ESEMPla" in a workshop where we can make something like this. I mean transform our newspaper in something bigger and more interactive. The students who want to get Graphic Design, Publicity or Marketing College could learn more deeply than in our first two years with "Festival de Publicidade" and "Amostra Jotoba". And the First and Second year can learn many things about it.
What do you guys thing about this idea?

I hope see your comments soon.
See you!
=D

p.s.: I'm not skipping classes, OK? I'm in my free period and in 5 minutes, I'll have History Class. xD'

Brazilian Culture, Big Mountain and Risk :)

HEEEEEY!
Everything's good??
We are really having a good time as usual!

Today in the afternoon, we presented our culture to the Elementary School.
We showed them our games, our beautiful flag, the Curupira story and forro! I really had fun!
Then we went to a really big mountain called Bald. To get there, we took little cars as we do on Sugarloaf and on the top, we had fondue with coke, coffee and capuccino in a cute restaurant where was pretty warm! Outside was so cold that I couldn't feel my fingers and ears and my mouth got purple!!! =O
Lisa Stelk was with us and we found a brazilian there. To be honest, I think that there are many brazilians here.

Now, Brett, Colton and I are playing "Risk" that looks like "WAR", you know!? It's cool.
After that, I'm gonna go to bed because my brazilian friends and I have a day tomorrow in Twin Falls which is a bigger city not so near to here. I'm so excited to visit this city!

I hope you are having a great vacation in Brazil! I'm sure that our beaches and sun are amazing! (But I know that many people are still having problems with the rains and floods)
See you guys!

kisses'n'hugs :)

Bowling? Yeah! I lost it =(

Hi everyone!!!
What's up?

I'm in the library now because Brett has a free period.
I've just had Geometry and it was AWESOME! We were talking about the test that the students had the other day.
Willy, the teacher, is really nice and his classes are pretty clear and interesting.
After this free period, we have History and Spanish!
OMG! Spanish class here is so good! It's like our English class at ESEM.
It's funny and Pilar, the Spanish teacher, is so nice!
Her classes are great and I think everybody likes them.

Yesterday we went bowling and it was nice.
Amanda, Hannah and Taylor won everything!
Maria and I... well... we were fine! LOL'
Before the bowling thing, I met the Hannah's family and she has many brothers and sisters. They are really cool and their house is so cute! I really had fun there.
She has a stepmother called Adrianna (I am not sure if the name is right or not) and I had the idea of cooking "brigadeiro" for them.
Today we are going to Ketchum and maybe we will go to Twin Falls on Thursday, which is a nice place to go shopping and buy some gifts.
I'm so sorry for not posting everyday. I'm having some problems to post on Brett's and I will post pictures soon.
See you guys!
I miss you very much, but I'm really having a good time here!
=D

Day in Ketchum | I know I'm late =D

Hey everyone!
How R U guys!?

Today was a great day! I was with Amanda, Jordy, Raiza, Geraldo and Maria de Lourdes.
We walked around the Downtown Ketchum and we visited many places there like the Community Library, a book store, Java coffe shop and a gift store.
I got a gift from Amanda and it`s a beautiful keychain from Sun Valley. *----*
Then we went to the Ketchum Town Party (it isn't a party like the ones we have in Brazil but it's like a snow festival) where there was a race. Despite the fact that it was too cold, all of us had fun.
After the party I went to a kind of restaurant with Brett to get dinner. I had "Hailey Burrito" and it's awesome!

I haven't talked about Brett, right!?
He's great! He's fifteen and he can DRIVE! Isn't nice!? Actually, many kids can drive here and it's not a big deal. I got terrified when Brett drove me to school at the first time but now I'm pretty OK with that!
His best friend Hannah is great too and I like her! We three are preparing something kind of a flash-mob to be presented on Monday and I think it's going to be amazing!
His family is also great and we are having much fun together! His younger brother Colton is nice and he tought me so many thing about the city and the things they do to have fun.
I'm sorry for not posting photos this time but I'll do it soon, OK?

We all are having a good time here and I'm really happy.
I miss you all.
kisses'n'hugs :)
